MINISTRY of Information and Media Permanent Secretary, Thabo Kawana, says the completion of the Lusaka-Ndola Dual Carriageway will be a game changer for the country.
He said the road will promote trade and commerce and enhance connectivity between key economic centers in the SADC region.
Mr Kawana made this statement in Chisamba District during the commemoration of the 2024 SADC Day, which Zambia marked by focusing on the Lusaka-Ndola Dual Carriageway project.
As part of the commemoration, the government, in collaboration with the Road Development Agency (RDA), organized a media tour for 25 journalists from different media houses to inspect the project from the Ngwerere Roundabout to Liteta.
The dual carriageway is being upgraded through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the government and Macro Ocean Investment Consortium (MOIC-LN) Limited.
Mr Kawana said once completed, the road will enhance connectivity between key economic centers not only in Zambia but also in the broader SADC region.
“The selection of this project is based on several factors, including the fact that when completed in 36 months, it will be a game changer by promoting trade and commerce, contributing to safer travel, and improving connectivity between key economic centers, both within Zambia and throughout the SADC region,” Mr Kawana said.
He further noted that Zambia, being land-linked and centrally located, is an ideal transit route for the movement of goods and services within the region.
Zimbabwean Deputy High Commissioner to Zambia, Patricia Makwanda, commended Zambia for the project, stating that infrastructure development is key to accelerating modernization and industrialization in both countries.
She added that the expansion of the road network aligns with regional aspirations as outlined in the SADC Infrastructure Master Plan.
“Rest assured, Zimbabwe will continue to uphold the cherished founding principles, values, goals, and objectives envisioned by the great luminaries and founding fathers of our region. Our country is ready to work with other regional countries to advance our shared regional agenda for the benefit of all SADC citizens,” she said.
Meanwhile, RDA principal engineer for Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), Mwema Tindi, revealed that works on the 45-kilometer Luanshya-Fisenge-Masangano road are expected to be completed this year, with 60 percent of the road already rehabilitated.
